about us

Timothy and Mary Nunns

We were both brought up in Christian homes – Timothy in Chislehurst, Mary in Northumberland Heath.  Timothy went to Chis & Sid (in the days when it took only boys) and Mary attended the Royal London Society for the Blind school at Seal.  Timothy then trained as a lawyer, Mary as an audio-typist;  and we both started work for Bexley Council.

Timothy noticed that one member of the typing pool typed his letters much better than anyone else;  Mary noticed that there was a new solicitor with a gorgeous voice …  and we married in May 1978 at St Paul’s, Northumberland Heath.

In 1980 we both moved on – Timothy to work for Lambeth Council and Mary to motherhood, with the birth of Sarah.  In 1986, the GLC was abolished – and Timothy was recruited by the new Fire Authority, where he stayed for 21 years.  Mary, meanwhile, had our second daughter Philippa, trained as a CRUSE counsellor, pursued her love of the organ and learned to wind-surf (with lessons on Danson Park Lake).

Timothy felt God’s nudging towards ministry in the church – and eventually was licensed as a Reader in 2003.  He took early retirement in 2007, which has given us time for some foreign travel.  One notable experience, combining his love of trains with her love of tennis, was a steam-hauled train across Austria, where we stopped in Linz and went to the WTA tennis tournament there.

We joined St James in December 2008 and were immediately welcomed with love.  Since then we have been involved in various things, including the Prayer Ministry team and the PCC;  and Timothy has been trained and authorised (as a Reader) to conduct funerals.
